"Communication regarding newborn baby"

About: Albany Health Campus Bremer Bay Health Centre

(as a relative),

My adult child delivered a beautiful newborn baby in at the Albany Health Campus last week. The staff in the maternity ward were amazing. Very kind and helpful. However when the time came for them to return home, which is quite a distance from Albany. On the Friday, the nursing staff wanted baby weighed on the Sunday to be sure the baby was feeding and gaining weight. The nurses attempted to find out if the baby could be weighed on the Sunday at the Bremer Bay Health Centre but where advised there was only a nurse on call. Emergencies only.

So they had to drive back to Albany on the Sunday  morning to have baby weighed, which they did without hesitation. It was very disappointing when when mid Sunday morning someone asked on social media if there was a nurse in Jerramungup to be answered no, but Bremer Bay has a clinic between 1-3 pm. Communication between the regional Health Campus and isolated health centres is very poor. This little family travelled a round trip of 360 km, however, had the nurses been able to communicate with the local nurse on the Friday they only need to go to the health centre in Bremer Bay at 1 pm.

Dear Delphinussg59,

Apologies for the inconvenience caused through the information discussed at discharge with the parents.

The social media post may have confirmed the fact on that day the clinic was open. Bremer Bay Nursing Post opening hours are determined by community need and are considered for busy long weekends. Clinic is not not routinely open other weekends unless by arrangement which can be put in place with the Nursing post in working hours. I assume this was Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Opening hours are only ‘proposed’ due to a number of factors; the nurse may have been called out during the night (or all night) and the clinic may not go ahead due to fatigue management. Also if there is a serious presentation then the clinic may not go ahead or people may have to wait many hours until the triage 1 or 2 case has been resolved (this was the case on one of the days over Easter). Jerramungup shire, Health direct and ambulances are made aware of proposed clinic opening times.

We do apologise for the inconvenience and we are happy to discuss further by calling Leanne on 98382211

Regards
