"Referral to ENT specialist was not responded to"

About: Hedland Health Campus

(as a relative),

My spouse was referred to the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialist for possible surgery and was never contacted, even though the hospital did contact my spouse to ask about their experience as the hospital was doing an audit. My spouse had to get another referral as it was over twelve months since the first referral was submitted and three months later was still not contacted. My spouse is now going to get another referral to be seen privately in Perth.

I feel frustrated, disappointed and angry.

Dear disappointing,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback to WA Country Health Service (WACHS) Pilbara regarding your communication issues with Headland Health Campus (HHC). I am sorry to hear that you have been in this situation for over a year and understand your frustration. I hope I can provide some clarification of our process.

The referral forwarded by your General Practitioner (GP) is received by the appropriate visiting specialist, in your case an Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) specialist. The ENT specialist reviews the referral and assigns a triage score based on the information provided by the GP. The triage score, which reflects the priority of the case, is used to set all appointments. Due to the high volume of referrals received, patients are only contacted once an appointment is made.

As such, if you would like to follow up the status of your referral please contact the HHC Ambulatory Care Unit on 9174 1380 or 9174 1381. You are also welcome to get in touch with the Pilbara Patient Safety Team with your contact details, at
WACHS-Pilbara.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au so we can look in to the specifics of your situation.

Kind regards,

Saria Tahsin

Update posted by disappointing (a relative)

I understand the high volume of patients. To not be given an appointment in over 15 months is not acceptable.

This is a quality of life issue and a patient should be able to be seen within 12 months.

Kind regards.
