"Hospital food and parking"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital Royal Flying Doctor Service

(as the patient),

I was flown up to Fiona Stanley Hospital by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) recently from Narrogin and received amazing service by RFDS. The staff at Fiona Stanley are great - friendly and cheerful. My nurse was Jason who was amazing - very friendly and happy and nothing was to much for him.

My problem is the price of parking which I believe is outrageous and cost my spouse a small fortune to come up and visit.

Also the food was not suitable for me. Spicy, bland and breakfast was the same every day. Some meals were totally wrong -  not what I ordered at all and others I just couldn't eat. It's either eat it or go without, there was no one to talk to about. I even sent my spouse down to get me food elsewhere because the food was terrible.

But the staff were great and doctors and service staff could not be faulted .

Dear rainsz73,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback via Patient Opinion regarding parking costs and food at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

I am sorry to read of your frustrations relating to the cost of parking at Fiona Stanley Hospital. The charges for parking at Fiona Stanley Hospital are set by the Metropolitan Access and Parking Department, in accordance with the WA Metropolitan Access and Parking Strategy.

The strategy includes an assessment of each WA Health campus in order to set the appropriate fees for parking at each site. This assessment takes many factors into account, such as proximity to public transport and parking bay availability.

There are various options that patients can discuss with their areas of treatment for reduction of parking; reasons may include financial hardship, private patients, extenuating circumstances etc.

We regret that you did not enjoy the meals during your stay at Fiona Stanley Hospital, and that you did not receive the food items you ordered. Whilst we endeavour to provide nutritious and quality meals, we understand food is subjective and patients opinions of the product they receive will vary.

It is surprising to hear that there was no one available to raise your food concerns with, our Food Service Assistants who are available during meal service, have alternative food options to offer patients.

If you would like to contact the FSH Patient and Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 or FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au, we would be happy to look into the meals you received, and the items that were not what you ordered.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty

Update posted by rainsz73 (the patient)

Thank you Mr Doverty for your quick response to my concern. Although I couldn't get a dietitian over Easter, the food delivery staff did try to help us as much as they could but the options if nothing suits are only sandwiches. I did contact the lady you suggested who was very helpful explaining everything.

The one other suggestion I would like to propose is country people who have no choice in getting public transport be given cheaper if not free parking.

I do appreciate your input in this and your staff.

Dear rainsz73,

I am glad to hear that you contacted us and provided your feedback. Your feedback about the meals you received has been provided to the catering team to inform their ongoing quality improvement program.

The parking concession scheme in place at Fiona Stanley Hospital has been developed in line with the WA Metropolitan Access and Parking guidelines. These guidelines do not have allowances for patients visiting from country regions. However, if patients/carers are experiencing financial difficulty, or extenuating circumstances, we encourage them to speak with their areas of treatment as they may be eligible for reduction of parking.

I understand that it does not resolve the issue, but we hope it helps. For further information, please visit https://www.fsh.health.wa.gov.au/For-patients-and-visitors/Parking

I wish you the best in your recovery.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty.
