I recently had day surgery at the Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne Australia.
The Eye and Ear Hospital is undergoing renovations and to say that it gives an impression of being a third world nation hospital is not too far of a stretch. But one can not judge a book by its cover.
The staff from the reception (Susan) to all the nurses (Claire, Deb, James, Rose -are some I remembered and I do not mean to slight anyone that helped me through the day) orbiting around me were first class in their professionalism and friendliness and it made the day go quick for me.
It has been my third operation there but it was the first time I was a day surgery patient and I applaud the Ward 4 for its efficient manner and professionalism.
My one suggestion - it would be helpful if someone during pre-admissions just said - we haven't forgotten you, we will be there soon. It would alleviate the anxiety of being late for a party. I sort of got antsy not really knowing the time frame for things...but that could just be me.
The surgical team in the basement were professional and courteous and I had no anxiety as it was all clear what was going to happen to me.
Recovery was good and there was a lot of friendly help offered.
As an American, I am proud of the public health system that Australia has to offer. The surroundings may not seem first class, but the care and professionalism have always been first class.
I feel all politicians should recognize the first class public system in Australia and make sure there is money available to renovate the buildings to a superior level so the buildings match the capacity of the staff. It goes without saying that there should also be more money for staffing.
