"Lack of pain management"

About: Donnybrook Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to ER with excruciating abdominal cramping. I had a blood sugar pin prick, why? I'm not diabetic or anything and I told the triage nurse I had a blood test last week. Gave a urine sample, got blood pressure check. Then they told me the hospital does not have a doctor and gave me Tylenol - my pain was extreme.

They fax my problem to some service they think is in Perth. Three hours later the nurse got a phone call from this service who told them to send me to my own doctor. I asked could I get some painkillers to get me through the night, the nurse said no they didn't mention that. I left with my extreme pain and now I'm in agony again with pains and throwing up. How can they call it a hospital?

Dear Nsync,

Thank you for sending this feedback in regards your experience at Donnybrook Hospital. I sincerely apologise that you did not get pain relief and that the care you received was less then optimal.

I’m quite concerned to hear of your ongoing symptoms and if you are currently in pain and vomiting I strongly encourage you to return to hospital or your local Doctor.

Is it also possible for you to please ring me on 0438 104 845 with your details, so that I can organise a full review of your presentation to the hospital and enable me to follow up with local staff at Donnybrook Hospital.

Again Sincere apologies

Lucy Murphy

A/District Manager

Dear Nsync,

Please accept my sincere apology for your experience at the Donnybrook Hospital. The hospital didn’t have access to a local Doctor the time you presented and used the WA Country Health Emergency Telehealth Service which is a 24/7 Emergency Physician led service used across WA to support Emergency Care. The Doctor involved sincerely apologises for the experience you had and the Clinical Nurse Manager has tried to follow up with you to see if you are ok.

I understand you may not want to hear from us again after your experience, though if you do it would be great if you could touch base on my mobile 0438 062 341 to assist in any way, and to get your input into preventing this experience happening again to someone else.

Kind regards,

Jeremy Higgins

Operations Manager, Inland
