"Children's Emergency"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Horrible experience, came in at 10.00 pm and waited until 1.00 am and still nobody came to check on my child until I kicked up a fuss and security was called. It seemed like the nurses were standing around talking sh** and laughing while children were waiting to be seen. I feel the nurses attitudes are absolutely disgusting. Never going back there again, I feel it is disgusting and there is absolutely zero care for children.

Dear Horrible,

I was disappointed to hear of your experience in the Children’s Emergency Department (ED). During busy times in the ED unfortunately some patients do wait longer to be seen. Patients are assessed at triage based on their condition at presentation and there will be times when some patients have a shorter wait than others based on clinical needs.

From your story it sounds as if you attended at a very busy time for the ED. I would like to assure you that during these times of high attendances the ED does have strategies in place to maintain patient safety. The triage nurse is responsible for keeping an eye on the waiting room and observing for clinical deterioration in the area and escalating clinical concerns as required.

The openness of the clinical area can lead to differences in perception of care. Ensuring that children receive care as soon as possible is something the ED staff strive for whatever the time of day.

Unfortunately I am unable to investigate your experience individually without further details and I would encourage you to contact us on (08) 6152 4013 if you wish us to discuss your specific experience further.

In regards to security being called, security staff will be called if staff feel threatened at any time. FSFHG has zero tolerance to aggression and we support our staff if they are faced with aggressive behaviour to take these measures in calling security. I have passed your feedback on to the ED staff who have noted your feedback on the behaviour of staff. I encourage you in future to discuss your concerns with the triage staff and advise them of any changes in the clinical condition of your child.

Kind regards

Neil Doverty
