"How the system is treating people suffering from mental illnesses"

About: Star Health - Mitford St

(as a service user),

Hard if not impossible, to get the care and help we need.

I feel invisible, without a voice, worthless, because of the "labelling". I feel no one believes me and that I'm being dismissed and told my word doesn't matter because it's typical of people with mental illness. No one wants to be their problem and I'm being passed on only to find another closed door.

You find yourself on a merry-go-round. Eventually, you get so dizzy, so exhausted, rejected that you crash and break. Then you fall through the cracks of the system and you give up. You lost all faith, trust and hope! When you reach this point life doesn't matter anymore.

And somehow I'm being told it's my fault, that I alone am responsible for my health and well being!

I wish I had the authority to prescribe myself the meds and treatment I need, to refer myself to specialists and my word will count.

I am in totally dissolution and have no wish to live.

I was asked to give feedback after a visit with an OT from Star health. Here it is!

Hi matarws53,

Thank you for your feedback, we are truly sorry to hear of your experience and we hope to be able to work with you through these difficulties.

We appreciate that the current system in mental health has its challenges, however no one should ever feel as though they are worthless or invisible after interaction with any mental health service and we apologise that your experience has led to these feelings.

I would genuinely appreciate the opportunity to discuss this further with you and see if we can help in any way. Please call 9525 1300 and ask for Paul Vanderputt. I will look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Paul Vanderputt, Program Manager, Primary and Mental Health
