My child has used child development services in Albany for 10 years. The lack of an easy access Paediatrician is the only downfall to these fantastic services. My child is currently struggling with ADHD and sensory processing disorders that require medicating. Once medication is prescribed by a visiting Paediatrician there is no guarantee of continuity of care - providers change and it's not always convenient to wait 8 weeks or more to reconvene to address issues around medicines prescribed, particularly when dealing with S8 medications.
Having to see local GP is unhelpful as I feel they are not experienced enough to make more than a hold over arrangement. This is another break in the continuity of care. I am now forced to go to Perth to seek private Paediatrician arrangement to build a profile and get continuity of care and build a relationship with my child. Medication around these types of diagnosis are so volatile and children are vulnerable to so many side effects which I, as the parent, have had to fumble through and make big decisions. I'm pretty assertive and feel frustrated. I'm sure many others are battling on.
A permanent Paediatric service is desperately needed for the Great Southern region of WA to ensure children are correctly, effectively medicated and have follow up and access to care in a reasonable time frame.
