"Day patient at Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus

(as a parent/guardian),

After we got the results for my spouse's stool sample (for which they had to ask for a test kit after contacting the Bowel Cancer group), we presented to our own doctor and were then listed for a pre-appointment with a doctor at Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital who explained the processes. They advised that sometime in the next 3-4 weeks we would get an appointment call for pre-admission/surgery at Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital.

Within a few days we get the call to Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital for colonoscopy procedure the following week. On the morning of the procedure we got a call from a staff member asking if we are able to come in earlier for a morning procedure instead, and we agreed to this. Arrived at Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital in the morning and went through the admission process forms/questions.... sigh: to await my spouse's morning procedure. Anesthetist comes in to do the pre-op checks, my spouse says they're lovely and explains all that's needed, and 20 minutes or so later down to surgery my spouse goes.

They return from theatre for post surgery checks and balances as required. Meanwhile the 3 nurses continue to complete the monitoring etc. and gave the all clear to leave with follow up appointment to get results from biopsy and inform of next visit back to see the surgeon in a week for results. Next step is trip to Perth for more surgery to remove the polyp discovered.

My spouse says a huge thanks to all staff/nurses on the day for their thorough care provided on the day and during earlier visits leading to the procedure. Very professional in their management provided. Thanks one and all from both of us.

Dear avocetjn69,

I am pleased to hear that your experience of our hospital was a positive one.

I will be sure and pass on our feedback to all the staff and departments concerned, they will genuinely appreciate it.

I wish your spouse well and a quick recovery from the next stages of their treatment.

Thank you again.

Kind Regards

Hi David Bowdidge,

Thanks for your comments in response to my spouse's ongoing procedure.

The only other point I would like to raise that occurred after my spouse's procedure is unfortunately the mailed notification from the hospital, informing us of both the pre-admission and procedure dates, arrived at our address a few days after my spouse underwent the procedure on 28th. Fortunately one of the nursing staff from pre-admissions had phoned earlier to inform us of the date/time of the pre-admission appointment for us to attend and subsequently at this appointment informed us the date/time of the surgery.

Now I'm not sure what happened with Australia Post delivering this vital information via two letters (dated the 15th from KRH) that arrived on the same day as stated before, a few days after the surgery occurred. So perhaps this issue needs to be addressed with them on why it took several days for these to arrive when by their own standards it should take no more than 4-5 days for normal mail to be delivered, and given we live a mere distance from the central post office and way less from the Boulder Post Office this delayed mail is a concern.

Perhaps now the hospital has our home email address this should be used as a backup for correspondence already sent by post to ensure the patient receives it?

Regards
