It is so disheartening when you visit the hospital in a small rural town to be met with the welcome, what’s your emergency!? Very well knowing that sometimes, going to the hospital Emergency Department is the only option we have. Even if it isn’t life threatening we shouldn’t be made to feel that we aren’t welcome. 

Numerous times I’ve visited the nurses in the triage, I believe they make you feel as though you’re not sick enough to be seen by the doctor. More times than not, they’ll also give you what they think your diagnosis is before you’ve seen the doctor. 

I full understand that being a nurse is an exhausting job and dealing with people all of the time can be hard. But that is their chosen profession. 

Anyone visiting the Emergency Department isn’t doing it just for fun, they want peace of mind and someone to listen to them.

Thank you for providing feedback regarding your experience at the Esperance Emergency Department. Our expectation is for staff to remain focussed and appropriate in their communication. For many reasons, we sometimes don’t meet expectations in this area and for this ask you to accept my apology. Following your feedback, the ED manager has engaged with all nursing staff to again reinforce the importance of appropriate communication.

Any person presenting to the ED is assessed by a specifically trained Triage Nurse who ensures each person is treated in a timely manner and according to their acuity. It is not always necessary for every person to be seen by a doctor. The ED also has a Nurse Practitioner who is highly skilled in treating many conditions, and Clinical Nurses who lead the entire Emergency Department team. Having these people helps our service deliver an effective and safe service to the community.

You mention having the need to visit the ED numerous times. As health care involves many facets from General Practitioners to the many complex specialty services, I would ask you take the time to contact the Senior Medical Officer, Dr Glackin on 9079 8000 who will be able to assist you in ensuring your health care needs are being met.
