My father is an elderly Aboriginal man who has historically been reluctant to engage with healthcare services. He recently had a stroke and received treatment at John Hunter Hospital.
While he experienced long waits for tests (eg MRI), the visits he received from the Aboriginal liaison officer were extremely valuable at making him feel like he was valued as a patient and his care was considered important by the hospital. I'm fairly certain he would not have been as diligent about his follow up care if he had not had this experience. He attended his follow up at the stroke clinic the other week and was happy to receive the all-clear.
Thank you for your consideration of the particular needs of men in our community like my father.
