I was recently admitted to a surgical ward on the top floor of Royal Perth Hospital for surgery.
Laying in bed I noticed the sprinkler situated above my bed was covered in fluff and what looked like mould. The ceiling around it had loose foreign material, the close proximity of the air conditioner blew this material around. I felt this was very poor and complained to the staff who asked the Cleaning Manager to my bedside. They stated that nothing could be done to clean the sprinkler as it would cause it to sprinkle water.
I had my operation and was sent home. I was home for only a few days when I became very ill and was sent back to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) via Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) where a diagnosis of Hospital Acquired Pneumonia was made. Another few days spent in hospital, thankfully this time all was clean.
I feel it will be months before I really get better and am left wondering if that sprinkler contributed to the pneumonia. There used to be an old adage ‘Hospitals should do the sick no harm’.
Hoping this problem can please be addressed.
