"Fantastic Emergency Department and Hospital Care"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department North Midlands Health Service / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My spouse, had the flu for a week or more when we finally went to the Emergency Department (ED) at the hospital in Three Springs. After being assessed by Judy and the team, who both were able to put my spouse at ease despite a total aversion to anything medical, treatment was started and we took a quick road trip to Geraldton Regional Hospital (GRH) with St John Ambulance.

After arriving at GRH, my spouse quickly went into respiratory failure. As the Royal Flying Doctor Service was unable to come immediately and were constantly busy with emergencies, the GRH ED had to cope. The nurses and medical team set up an Intensive Care Unit bay to care for my spouse during the evening and overnight. The nursing was outstanding, particularly the evening Registered Nurse (RN), sorry I can't remember your name, and Adrian the RN on night shift, who was totally amazing, keeping my spouse and myself calm while administering complex care.

The medical team so capably lead by Dr Roy were expert, constantly there, while keeping in contact with the Respiratory Unit in Perth. The care was so good that by next morning the need to fly my spouse out had deescalated. The next five days in the High Dependency Unit were difficult for us, but was made easier by the fantastic medical and nursing staff who constantly cared for us. After finally getting to a normal ward, my spouse quickly improved.

All the time we both marvelled on the professionalism, care and good nature of all the staff and their understanding of how people like my spouse tick, with four very raucous people in the ward it made for quite an entertaining time. They were hilarious! Every one of the staff from nursing, TAFE trainees, and Patient Care Assistant's, all managed to get on board and go along with, at times, some questionable humour. We both would like to sincerely thank all the staff at GRH. You all made a huge difference in my spouse's recovery.

Dear Wnada,

Thank you for sharing your wonderful compliment on Patient Opinion, we really appreciate you taking the time to share you and your spouse's experience with the teams at the Three Springs and Geraldton Hospital, particularly in light of what must have been an extremely stressful time for you both. I was sorry to read of your spouse's illness and so pleased that the care your spouse received was of a high calibre. It is through stories like yours, we certainly get a sense of the great care being provided in our hospitals across the Midwest region.

Stories like yours remind us that providing healthcare is so much more than treating the ill, it’s about providing compassion, empathy and supportive care to both the patient and their loved ones. You and your spouse's positive experience is a great example of the work our teams do every day and I will take great pride and delight in passing on your thanks and acknowledgement to our very committed front line staff with a special mention to Judy, Adrian, Dr Roy.

Patient Opinion strengthens the partnership we have with our service users by allowing patients, families and carers the opportunity to share their personal stories and it really does keep myself and our organisation closely connected with what matters most to our health service users.

Thanks again for taking the time to write and I hope your spouse is recovering well.

Best wishes

Michele
