"Missed diagnosis of Influenza A"

About: Armadale Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

I have taken my child to Armadale Hospital three times recently because my child has had high fevers of 40 for six days now.

Instead of doctors checking my child over properly and doing further tests they sent us home and said to give my child Panadol, Nurofen and icy poles!

The fevers were getting worse and my child was put on antibiotics from our GP but they didn't help.

So I decided to take my child to a different hospital yesterday.

They did tests! And it turns out my child is positive for influenza A.

I'm absolutely disgusted in Armadale Hospital's care, I feel it is very poor, they were aware that my child hasn't had the flu shot and refused to do further tests.

Dear hotelkh65,

I appreciate you taking the time to write to us, and I am very sorry to hear of your recent experiences at the Armadale Hospital Emergency Department (ED).

As a mother, I can absolutely empathise with your frustration and distress in seeking help for your sick child and feeling as though you are not receiving any solutions. I am disappointed to hear you say that your child was not properly assessed on the 3 occasions you presented to the ED. Our team strive each day to ensure quality and compassionate care is provided, especially to children, so I am very disappointed to hear your story.

Learning more about our parent’s experience helps us to identify where we can improve our assessment and communication with children in the emergency department. I would really encourage you to contact us as I know the Director of Emergency would appreciate being able to review your concerns and the care we provided. If you would consider allowing us the opportunity to speak with you, please contact me on (08) 9391 2101 so we can facilitate an appropriate time to meet.

Thank you again for raising this important matter with us, and I hope your child is now recovering well.

Kind regards

Di Barr
