"Negligence in the Emergency Department"

About: Armadale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I arrived at the hospital during the early morning recently. I had excruciating hip pain and abdominal pain. I instantly told them I was worried about my baby as I was in the early stages of pregnancy through IVF. It seemed like they had no concern about the baby and told me they'd do an ultrasound on my hip and I had to ask repeatedly for an abdominal ultrasound to make sure bub was okay. They sent me home with Panadol after giving me pain killers through the drip.

Four hours later I was back in the Emergency Department. This time screaming in agony. They initially thought I had ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), it took them at least 5 times to try and get a cannula in to give me some pain relief. After about 45 minutes it had to be done through ultrasound on my arm. Hours later I got that abdominal ultrasound. Turned out I was bleeding internally and my baby was nowhere to be seen. I had a ruptured ectopic. I lost 1.5-2 litres of blood internally and I got rushed into surgery shortly after the ultrasound.

I believe due to the initial doctor's negligence and how delayed they were when I was in excruciating pain the second time is the cause of the outcome. I've now lost my tube which is understandable with an ectopic but the recovery from the blood loss and the trauma hasn't been easy.

I feel that Armadale Hospital doctors need to be investigated. It seems like they generally don't care. In my opinion they are negligent and almost killed me.

Dear leocg79

I am very saddened and sorry to read about your recent experience and can appreciate how traumatic this must have been for you. Having such high concerns for your baby given the circumstances was absolutely understandable and I am very disappointed to hear that you were not provided with any support in the early stages to alleviate your apprehension.

I am extremely concerned about your experience as you have described it, and know that the Director of Emergency Medicine would appreciate the opportunity to discuss and review the care provided to you further. If you would consider allowing us this opportunity, please contact me on (08) 9391 2101 so we can facilitate an appropriate time to meet with you.

Thank you for bringing this important matter to our attention, as I acknowledge this hasn’t been an easy process. I do hope we hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Di Barr
