"Detoxing from alcohol"

About: Lyndon Withdrawal Unit

(as a service user),

I recently stayed at Wyla in the Withdrawal Unit. I have a hearing impairment. Everything was verbalised which made things challenging for me. I read the 'General Rules' information carefully so that I would be informed. The time stated, in the handout, for groups starting was 8.30 am. The following morning I made sure that I was going to be ready for 8.30 am but was told to hurry up because group started at 8.00 am. I asked about the brochure and was told it was wrong and hadn't been updated. This was not helpful for me.

I felt that it was confusing having the detox and rehab clients together in the one space. There weren't any timetables showing clearly which group was for which cohort of people.

I couldn't have a shower on the first night as I was unable to access a towel. It seemed problematic due to a key issue. The towels were locked up so access seemed difficult. When I expressed my concerns to the case manager (when I finally got to see them) they said that the staff are just lazy.

My experience was that the service is badly mismanaged.

I felt that the experience was totally frustrating. Twice I was told to be ready to leave the next day and I hadn't even seen a case manager. The staff all seemed tense and it wasn't a pleasant environment to be in. Other clients were asking for my help as they also wanted to provide feedback.

Hi jupiterhs39,

Thank you for taking the time to raise these serious concerns. I am sorry that your experience of the Wyla Withdrawal Unit was so poor and that your needs were not met by the service.

I have passed your feedback on to the manager of the Wyla services so that they can give you a more comprehensive response. Please check back in the next 24 hours for a further response.

In the meantime, if you would like to speak directly to me or the manager of Wyla, please feel free to call 1300 596 366 and ask to be put through to Josh or Jemma.

Kind Regards,

Josh
