"Poor X-ray bedside manner"

About: Maroondah Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My young child needed an X-ray at Maroondah Hospital. We had triage nurse assess us, then waited for the doctor who came and assessed my child. Doctor's assessment was we needed an X-ray on their ankle. The doctor escorted us to the waiting area for an X-ray and waited our turn. The radiologist called my child's name, didn’t introduce themselves and said you don’t need mum or dad do you? My child said yes, I do and I said I was coming in. While in the X-ray room they didn’t take the time to explain to my child what was happening, what would happen next and I had to help when radiologist wanted them to lay a particular way as my child didn’t understand and I felt the radiologist didn’t help them understand. Part of the radiologist's job was to reassure their and help their young patients. It was lucky I did go into the examination room.

My child doesn’t have X-rays all the time so they were unsure what was happening. They were nervous about the process and they were in extreme pain. All things that were ignored by radiologist. I felt it was very poor patient care and that is their job. The next time my child has an accident, the treatment from yesterday will be there to add anxiety to their next injury. It would have taken a couple of minutes to reassure a little child what was happening and have a positive experience.

Dear Adult,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share the experience you and your child had when having an X-ray taken at Maroondah Hospital. I appreciate your openness and the details you have provided. I would like to apologise for the experience you both had as I am 100% positive the manager of the service will be.

Eastern Health values are Patients First, Kindness, Respect, Excellence, Agility and Humility and from how you have desctribed your experience, there appears to be room for improvement in how these values are practised each and every day.

I will share your comments with the Medical Imaging Manager so your experience can be used as a learning experience and also to highlight the importance of our values.

Trusting your child's injury is recovering well and the rest of your experience was more positive.

Kind regards and best wishes

David
