"Birth of my first child"

About: Canberra Hospital / Maternity Services

(as the patient),

I, unfortunately, had to birth my first baby at The Canberra Hospital (TCH) instead of another hospital due to medical reasons and staffing. The birth process in itself was as fine as can be, my midwife was great but as soon as my child entered the world everything went downhill.

It was time to push out my placenta but it was stuck. The nurses and second midwife knew it was stuck but told me to keep pushing as they keep pulling and pushing down on my stomach. At this point, I was bleeding. I could feel the blood gushing out down my legs into my feet. They kept telling me I was fine my placenta was just stuck. They kept pushing on my stomach and pulling my placenta until some came out while the rest broke off inside me, blood still gushing out. At this point, the doctors were finally called in to have me rushed to surgery to have the broken off part surgically removed. The nurses and doctors were getting me ready for surgery putting the cannulas in my arms. The cannula kept tissuing. So now my arms are throbbing and bruised. The surgery went well, I finally got to hold my newborn baby.

That afternoon I was informed that I had lost 3 litres of blood, they then went on to tell me I was OK to go home. I demanded I be transferred back to the other hospital. They agreed and let my partner and I, with our newborn baby (only a few hours old), drive ourselves to the other hospital. Once we arrived there they could not believe they allowed us to drive. I settled in bed after having some tests done. I then had to receive a blood and iron transfusion. The staff at the other hospital could not believe that  TCH were going to send me home after losing so much blood. I will never birth there again (even though it was not by choice that I did).
