"My Water Birth Experience"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Maternity Services

(as the patient),

I just wanted to say thank you to the staff that were part of my child's birth last year. Sorry it has taken so long to get this done.

I believe I was the first patient in two years who was granted the use of the bath at Wonthaggi Hospital to labour in, since laws (unsure what laws), had stopped women using the bath during their birthing experience. I used hypnobirthing as my pain management and doing this in the bath, I feel made my labour manageable, peaceful and an overall relaxing experience. I was not allowed to give birth in the water which I understood and complied with. The hardest part of my labour was having to have the water taken out of the bath, it would have been fantastic to do a water birth so I hope for other women that this may be possible at Wonthaggi Hospital one day.

However, I was so grateful to have been granted the use of the bath and wanted to say a big thank you to the staff and Wonthaggi midwifery for organising this for me. I also wanted to say a big thank you to two of my midwives. Chantel and Corina I believe were their names. Chantel was extremely supportive during my hypnobirthing and past experience assured me she knew what my body was doing and how to manage me. Corina was absolutely fantastic with helping me breastfeed. I believe her technique was the difference between me breastfeeding or not this time round. Overall the staff and support at Wonthaggi were amazing. Thank you.

Dear venussm58,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback even if it is somewhat delayed. It's awesome that you have even remembered the names of the midwives who supported you - I know they will be very chuffed.

The water birth issue is trickier at Wonthaggi than other places because we have very old water pipes and we have had high counts of Legionella in our water in the past. I am hoping that the staff explained to you that these safeguards (not laws) were put in place to minimise any risk to you and your babe - Legionella is carried by droplets and so our most important job in this environment is to minimise any splashing or unnecessary exposure. We are in the process of renewing our Water Filtration system which will provide better safeguards going forward and in the interim, our approach is very safe and cautious.

We have a wonderful group of midwives who are there to support women in their individual birthing choices - I am glad we were able to support you in yours. I hope your new family is doing well.

All the best,
Jan.
