"Easy surgery recovery"

About: Kerang Hospital

(as the patient),

My spouse and I moved to Kerang (Victoria) in the last few years, to be nearer to family.

I do have health problems, managed by medication. Fitzroy Street Medical Centre thought I would benefit by strength and balance exercise at Kerang Hospital.

I thought I had plenty of exercise. Home and garden, washing to shops, library. When I decided to ride a bike again - I couldn't - that convinced me to attend exercise sessions twice each week.

When I did have a fall earlier on in the year, the Orthopaedic Surgeon (despite my age), and because of the exercises and day to day activities, I wanted a completely new hip which is not always justified.

I was in hospital for a couple of days awaiting my surgery. I needed the strength in my arms and shoulders to lift myself by the overhead apparatus without calling nurses each time I needed to move.

I looked forward to returning to exercise sessions planned for my needs post op.

The facility at Kerang Hospital is comprehensive. The staff are knowledgeable, encouraging and very kind.

The benefit of this facility is for elder people to prolong being able to go out and about. If surgery becomes necessary, recovery, in my case was quicker and easier.

Hi camelopardalises47,

My name is Sue Gray and I am the Nurse Unit Manager of the District Services Programs, including the Exercise Program.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback with regard to the Exercise Program at Kerang District Health.

We have a focus on wellness and reablement, which has been shown to improve function, independence and quality of life for older people.

I agree that we all believe that we exercise in our daily life, however, it is amazing what a difference a tailored exercise program can make to our health and wellbeing.

Our staff caring staff work very hard for each client and will be thrilled to receive your feedback.

Thank you for taking the time to record experiences.

Sue

Dear camelopardalises47,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your health journey. There are a lot of service providers involved in your care from Northern District Community Health Clinic ( formerly Fitzroy St Medical Clinic), the Orthopaedic Surgeon, the local hospital at Kerang and the Exercise Program offered through the Strength-Based Program.

Being healthy and fit takes on a different meaning as we age, but is still as important as when we are young, and sometimes we run out of steam and lack motivation. Having a program tailored to our goals is really helpful, and also doing the exercises with others around can be motivating.

I wonder if you also take part in the Tai Chi classes that get offered too?

Again, thank you for sharing your story. Your resilience and determination are amazing!

Kind Regards

Chloe
