"Supporting our child in addiction"

About: Mirikai Residential Rehabilitation Facility

(as a parent/guardian),

Seeing a loved one destroy themselves through substance abuse is something no parent, actually nobody, should ever have to experience. There are no words to describe the pain and heartache, which is only the emotional side of things, but the toll it also takes physically and financially further lend to the deep devastation, that addiction causes in tearing families apart.

That is how we felt when our once beautiful, kind, loving child fell victim to the devil drug - meth! And struggled, for quite some time through detox and rehab, to beat the psychological desires that overcame everything else.

This was when the wonderful Jenny walked into our lives and to say that we feel blessed to have her, would be a great understatement.

Jenny's non-judgmental counselling of our child could not have been better or more supportive. Even when our child and ourselves had given up, Jenny found the positives and the motivational factors, to further instill the will to beat this by all of us.

Our situation is complex, with hostile ex-partners and a child involved, so our journey was fraught with sensitivities and struggles the whole way through. At times, we as parents of the addict were unable to help our child. Not through lack of wanting, but we felt totally at a loss, couldn't comprehend the power of addiction, and felt we failed in supporting our child because were not equipped to handle the situation.

Jenny acted as a guiding light, speaking with all of us from time to time to find ways of moving forward, and encouraging us when we met some bumps in the road. She helped us understand that addiction is an illness... and that relapse is part of it, and guided us in learning more about how we could help our child as well as maintain our own health and wellbeing so that we could continue to cope.

Currently, we are still on a bumpy road, however, it does feel that we are stronger and better, for our child and ourselves and the grandchild involved. This is greatly due to the involvement of Jenny as counsellor. She manages to deliver a professional and friendly service, however, she also managed to do it in such a compassionate and personal way, that we are left all the better and wiser for.

Thank you!
