"D Ward visitor"

About: Kalgoorlie Allied Health

(as a friend),

I have a friend in D Ward who I visited recently who has Leukaemia, they are a Neutropenia patient.

When I approached the nurse's desk to ask what room they was in I was not told that I would have to wear a mask before entering the room. Outside the room there is a sign, but to a visitor this doesn't mean much when you don’t know what that big word on purple paper means.

I wish to bring to attention that maybe the front nursing staff need to inform visitors that they will need to wear a mask and wash hands before entering the room. Also maybe the sign needs to say please put on mask before entering.

Hello Rock,

Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention.

The Ward has immediately changed the signage for these situations in order that it be more understandable for visitors. Now, instead of simply saying “Neutropenia”, which as you say is potentially meaningless to non-clinical people, the signage now says “Notice to all staff and visitors. Neutropaenic Precautions. Please wash hands and put on mask before entering.”

This should prevent the circumstances you experienced from happening again.

Thank you for your feedback to us, it has enabled us to make a change that will improve the service to patients and visitors in the future.

Kind regards
