"I couldn't be more angry and upset"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My parent was admitted to Box Hill Hospital (BHH) Emergency Department recently. They had a fall at the nursing home and ended up unconscious, eight stitches above their eye, a broken bone in their neck and a fracture in their spine. I have been told three different versions of what actually happened, which I find alarming.

My parent has Alzheimer's and cannot tell me directly. 16 days later BHH released them back to the very place that caused this injury against my advice and pleading to send them to rehab or another private hospital.

They have just plainly disregarded any of my concerns and sent them back without their spinal brace and no spare inserts for the neck brace.

I have called their helpline and have received no call back. So now my elderly parent has been released from hospital against my wishes with Alzheimer's, broken bone in their neck, fracture in their spine, and delirium. They are not able to get out of bed, or feed themselves. I feel this is an absolute disgrace by a hospital that should know better.

I couldn't be more angry and upset if I tried.

Dear velarw67,

Thank you for your comments and taking the time to share them with us via Patient Opinion. I am really sorry firstly that your parent fell, and was injured and secondly, your experience with them as an inpatient at Box Hill Hospital was not a positive one and that your concerns were not acted upon.

Your comments raised numerous questions for me and in order for us to follow up with your particular circumstances, I would like to invite you to contact one of our Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience either by calling 1800 EASTERN or by emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au. If you choose to call please be aware that it is possible that the Patient Relations Advisors may be on another call at the time you ring and if so you will be invited to leave a message so they can return your call.

I hope we hear from you soon and that your parent is doing okay in their home.

Kind regards,

David
