"Our family's experience of Wantirna Health"

About: Wantirna Health / Palliative Care Inpatient Unit

(as a relative),

Our much-loved father, grandfather and former husband (but friend for 53 years) was transferred from Maroondah Hospital to Wantirna Health a few months ago.

After major brain surgery last year it was discovered he had terminal cancer.  He eventually returned, in early 2019 to his own home and managed to continue to live alone, supported by a Transition Care Package delivered by Eastern Health.  Family members helped as well.

This man was fiercely independent and a happy introvert.  He was most reluctant to have help and people constantly coming to "visit".  But the Care Package deliverers prevailed (as did we, his family!)   Most of them came to realise he was "grumpy" but somehow likeable.  This was how the staff at Wantirna Health found him to be, also.

He spent his last almost two months at Wantirna Health.  He always wanted to go home.  To their great credit, the doctors listened to him, and tried, always, to help him to be well enough to do this.  Sadly, we - all of us, family and staff at Wantirna Health - didn't manage to do this.

We, his family, will always be so appreciative of them for the respect they showed our family member. He was transferred to the Palliative Care wing recently and died the following day.

Without fail, all staff: doctors, nurses, ancillary staff, treated him with warmth, humour, gentleness and great kindness.

We, the family, were kept informed at all times and treated with warmth and sensitivity.  Thank you, so very much.

Dear sierragz35,

Thank you so much for sharing these comments regarding your experience with the care your father, grandfather and former husband had at Wantirna Health. Please accept my condolensces for your loss. No matter that it was expected, I am sure this would have been, and continues to be, a very difficult time for you all (patient included!).

It will give me great pleasure to share your comments with the Palliative Care staff, the Transition Care Program staff and all involved in providing care and service so they see the imapct they have had. It is clear through your comments that the Eastern Health values of Patients First, Kindness, Respect, Excellence, Agility and Humility were present for you all and this makes me so proud!

I wish you and your family the best of health and you adjust to your new reality and thank you again.

Kind regards

David
