"Treatment at the emergency service"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Having been sent up by my local Doctor with breathing problems, I registered at the Emergency Department at Bunbury Regional Hospital. The Dr explained that with breathing problems, I would most likely be attended to quickly.  Well, being the first person in and seeing the Triage Nurse, I sat with my partner for two hours seeing later registrations going in before.

As I am older and not perhaps strong enough to fight the infection, I feel this was too long to wait for treatment. So I left, going back to the Dr. for treatment, new antibiotics etc.

I'm not complaining about care for I believe this is provided when you get in. This is the procedure that on this day I felt neglected and ignored.

This was disappointing and distressing adding to my breathing problems. The only person in the Emergency Department was on their own and perhaps there should be someone to advise you what is happening when they just walk out grab a file and other people enter. Just an explanation would help and a time estimate to wait.

Dear Endless,

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion. I am sorry for the wait you experienced. I note that you left the ED and needed to go back to your GP.

I agree with you that staff should have communicated to you about what was occurring and checked in with you. This would have kept you informed on the current status and would have prevented you feeling neglected and ignored.

Following recent feedback of a similar nature, the Bunbury Hospital Emergency Department team have initiated some changes to make sure, that on a regular basis, a nurse is checking in with and updating patients, in the waiting room.

I do apologise for your experience and hope you have received the care you required. Should you wish to discuss your experience further, please contact me via 9722 1421.

Regards

Glen Matters
