"Inappropriate behaviour and treatment of patient"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I recently had two visits to the Emergency Department.

On the first visit, I came in the morning, was checked over and given two pain killers and sent home. On the discharge notes, the instruction was to visit my GP if things had not improved. I did this and was sent to have a CT Scan on my lungs. I was advised by my GP to return straight to emergency due to blood clots in the lungs.

I re-attended emergency that evening and was admitted immediately and treated. I was moved to the ward later that night and was discharged the following day in the morning after seeing the Drs and given scripts for the medication.

It was at this point I was insulted and humiliated and fat-shamed by the person who transported me downstairs to the Transit Lounge. I am a large person and when the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) broke the chair when it hit the wall in the lift, I was humiliated by this person telling everyone that we had issues because I was so heavy.

They finally got another chair after ten minutes and different PCA took me the remainder of the way followed by the first PCA. It was at this point I noticed that the 1st PCA had all their badges turned so no name or face was visible in any way.

We waited in the Transit Lounge for 2.5 hrs for the discharge letter. We were instructed that the letter would be available immediately due to us filling our own script ( scripts pre-written and in the folder by the Pharmacist who visited on the ward.) For some reason, no one had checked the paperwork correctly as the scripts were present. After asking twice what was happening, we were told we were waiting for medication.

It was at this point my spouse had questioned why are we waiting as the scripts are in the folder. It was at this point I contacted Liaison Services and amazingly things moved very fast. It was about 2 minutes when I was approached by the Head Nurse who had received a call from Liaison Service in regard to the call I had previously logged.

I had explained my disgust in the way the PCA treated me on the way down and how fat-shaming me in public was not an acceptable practice or behaviour of someone in the health service industry. It was at this point we identified the PCA involved in this issue who was known to the Head Nurse.

Dear atlasqj79,

Thank you for sharing your patient story. I'm sorry to hear of your recent experience at Fiona Stanley Hospital, particularly that you felt humiliated and insulted by a member of staff. The behaviour you described is not acceptable, and doesn't align to our patient-centred values. Our staff are trained in respectfulness and responsiveness, it's disappointing to hear that a staff member hasn't acted within these values.

I understand that you have made contact with our Patient and Family Liaison Service and we are currently conducting an investigation into this situation.

Once again, I am sorry for your experience.

Kind Regards,

Paul Mark
