"They wanted to send me home"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department Fiona Stanley Hospital / ICU Intensive Care Unit

(as the patient),

I was immediately admitted into the Emergency Department (ED) with Diabetic Ketoacidosis. The care and speed of the staff was amazing despite it being a horribly busy day, big shout out to Nurses Joel and Tia who helped look after me.

Not long after midday, I was told that I was not responding to the DKA protocol and would need a bed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Not long after, I was told I was responding and would go onto a ward.

At about 4pm I was wheeled up to another Ward. Not long after arriving, all my canullas were stopped even though I was still extremely dehydrated, and just had a bout of diarrhoea and vomiting.

A junior doctor came to see me, informed me that I didn’t look unwell and would be going home the next day.

I had dinner that night, threw it up and had two hypos.

When the consultant came around the next morning with her medical team, she listened to my symptoms, did an examination and said her team would monitor me and I would most likely go home the next day.

I ate breakfast but could only keep down a slice of toast, I ate lunch but threw up again.

That afternoon, early on to mid afternoon, one of the Junior Doctors came to see me to say a patient downstairs needed my bed as they had kidney problems. Would I go home? I said I was not confident about going home as I still felt extraordinarily unwell, was still throwing up and was still very dehydrated. The doctor said there maybe another option to stay in another ward to which I answered, sure.

About half an hour later, the Junior doctor from the previous afternoon came to see me and said I was not unwell enough to stay in hospital and my fears would be supported by prescriptions on my way out the door, so what could I do but leave?

The next day I presented to my GP extremely sick who advised me to present to ED again immediately for monitoring. As I had lost faith in Fiona Stanley I went to another hospital where I have since been admitted.
