"Hip pain"

About: Maroondah Hospital

(as the patient),

I was in acute pain and an ambulance was called.  The emergency was very good and I was X-rayed and cat scanned and was admitted to the hospital.

I was in for 5 days and the first doctor visited me and said my hip was stuffed, one of the worst they had seen and it was bone-on-bone with no cushioning left.  This was confirmed by 2 others they told me I needed a hip replacement ASAP.

On the 3rd day, a doctor told me they were worried about the ball joint as it had tiny marks all the way around which maybe fractures so I had a cat scan but no one told me the results.  I was told that it, as it was urgent to have the op, they would arrange physio to help strengthen me as I  was booked to go on away and they could work around that.

I was discharged on the 5th day and waited for the promised phone call. After 4 days I rang and was told by the physio that I would get a call in 2-3 weeks. I told them that was too late and they replied that was standard and it wasn't an emergency because I could still walk, which is almost impossible as I can feel my bones rubbing together and it is in contradiction to what was told to me by the doctor.

I  want to know does anyone ever read what is written or does the report just get put into the system regardless of where it is urgent or  not

Dear stonesn77,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your balanced comments regarding your experience when at Maroondah Hospital. I'm sorry there were aspects of your experience that were not as positive as they could have been.

I understand you have now had a discussion with our Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience. With the details you have provided during this discussion we have commenced a review of your care and experience and will get back to you as soon as this has been completed.

Thank you again and I wish you the very best for the future and hope we are able to further assist to relieve your hip pain into the future.

Kind regards

David

Update posted by stonesn77 (the patient)

I have now been contacted and will receive physio soon which is a much better outcome. I would urge patients to be persistent in getting a follow up to their treatment as they can get lost in the system.
