"Concern over morning tea service"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Haemodialysis Department

(as a carer),

As a carer to a dialysis patient, I was concerned by the way morning tea was given to the dialysis patients recently by a catering staff member at the Wonthaggi Hospital Dialysis Unit.

I noticed that the catering staff member, on confirming what the patient wanted for their morning tea, placed their food on a thin paper serviette and then on the chair arm rest tray. I was surprised that this was not placed on a plate for them to manage as the thin serviette was not the easiest for them to get to or use if needed.

These patients can only use one hand as the other hand/arm is restricted due to being connected to their machine. I was concerned about cross contamination that could happen with the way that the food was served to these patients, as they normally get their food on a plate.

Dear Dialysis Carer,

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. I have spoken to the executive responsible for food services, and we agree that a plate sounds eminently sensible. We will follow this up tomorrow and make sure this is put into place.

Thank you once again for letting us know.

Kind Regards, Jan.
