"Treatment of distal metatarsal fracture"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Orthopaedic Surgery

(as the patient),

Earlier this year I fell and twisted my foot. My doctor sent me for an X-ray an then to Emergency at SCGH. I was very happy with treatment there (and shared that with friends).  I was given a Moonboot. A physiotherapist happened to be there. They gave me some 'moon' sandals and said it was lucky they were there as it meant I wouldn't have to come in, a phone call would do.

I went home happy. Except I was surprised I was not given written instructions. E.g., 'If this happens do this.' 'You can take it off in bed if you like.' ( The bed information is all I remember being told.) I think someone going to Emergency will be stressed and very unlikely to remember instructions.

Two months later I received an appointment for the Orthopaedic Outpatients Department this month. Hurrah! That appointment turned out to be my one year check  for my knee replacement surgery. The doctor said the  physiotherapists handle the foot. It seemed there was no message passed on from Emergency. He kindly checked my foot and said the check was usually through symptoms rather than X-rays and my foot seemed OK and I could have it out of the boot a bit. Physiotherapy would be informed.

No information had been sent to my GP. I had made an appointment with my podiatrist 2 days later. Because the foot was hot and somewhat swollen she sent me for an X-ray. To my great distress this X-ray, two months after the fracture, looks exactly the same as the X-ray two months ago! I left the radiologist in tears. Taking action myself, now.

Dear taruskd39,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback about your experience at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I was pleased to read that you were happy with the treatment that you received in the Emergency Department.

Thank you for bringing to my attention the lack of written instructions that you received for your moonboot. Our physiotherapists aim to ensure that patients are provided with detailed information when this appliance is fitted and supplied, and I apologise that this was not your experience.

I will ensure that your feedback is shared with the physiotherapy staff, as a valuable reminder that taking the time to provide patients with written information, especially during stressful times, can make a significant difference to their recovery journey.

I was sorry to read of the distress caused with your second x-ray results. Without knowing the specific details, I am unable to provide further information or advice. I would encourage you to contact the Consumer Liaison Service (phone: 6457 2867 or email CLS@health.wa.gov.au) to provide your personal details, which will allow our staff to provide a more personalised response.

Once again thanks for bringing your concerns to our attention.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
