At 54 years of age I realised that my drinking was leaving me in a hopeless state.
I had been drinking regularly and heavily for over 35 years and watched my sister slowly kill herself with the same addiction. I was experiencing blackouts and injuring myself while drinking on a regular basis and I knew my drinking was out of control.
Watching my children's (ages 30 and 26) hearts break again in February this year on the anniversary of their fathers passing was the push I needed to motivate me. I did not want to end up like my sister. I wanted to watch my grandchildren grow.
This is when I spoke to my doctor and attended our local Drug and Alcohol facility in Nowra for assistance. While discussing my options I was advised of the Nana Munu Program run by Lives Lived Well situated in Nowra, NSW. I was extremely lucky that at the time of my self-referral there was a program starting the following week, so I jumped straight on board. The program ran 3 days per week for 4 weeks. During the program, I relearnt the important self-care and mindfulness that I had let slip during my drinking. This has proven to be my key to beginning my journey of sobriety. The program gave me back the building blocks for my life that I had forgotten during this addiction. I felt it was unlike AA or NA and felt much more inclusive, supportive and non-judgemental.
I am very grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this program. The facilitators were extremely knowledgeable and willing to give any amount of time to any participant that felt like they required it.I have remained sober since I began the program (26 days) and have already noticed changes in my physical and mental health.
