"Patient placement and patients on contact precautions"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was admitted with pre eclampsia. I will have a micro premature baby at 28 weeks.

I noticed in the room section I was in 3 of those rooms are full contact precautions including the rooms directly next to mine. I feel that the choice to place 3 sick people in the same corner as a person who is going to have such a vulnerable baby has been seriously overlooked and I believe it places a danger of me and my family not being able to be with our baby if we were to catch 1 of those 3 illnesses these patients have.

This has left me feeling uncomfortable and unsafe. This also has made me feel like I cannot bring my medically complex/vulnerable young child in to see me any further for their safety.

Dear Tee2208

Thank you for reaching out via Care Opinion. I am truly sorry to hear that you're feeling uncomfortable and unsafe at such a worrying time. Your well-being is important to us, and I’m glad you reached out so that we can offer support.

I would like to reassure you that contact precautions are put in place to ensure the safety of all our patients, their visitors, and our staff. If it would be helpful to speak with a senior member of our Nursing and Midwifery team to discuss your concerns further, please don’t hesitate to ask the Midwife caring for you if you can speak to the Clinical Midwifery Consultant of the ward. Alternatively, if you reach out to our Consumer Liaison Team by phone at 6458 1444 or via email at wnhscls@health.wa.gov.au, they will put you in contact with the ward leader.

Take care,

Delaney
