"Inpatient and outpatient care"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Ward 1B - Burns Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

My child had surgery at PCH for tonsils and adenoids removal. In my opinion, the in patient care was all over the place. I found you get excellent nurses and care or you get very bad care on a ward.  They don't seem to feed the parents who are caring for their child all meals. You get basic cereal for breakfast and that's it. We are then expected to take turns with our family or partners to go and get food. This is very expensive for any family who are in the hospital with their children for a substantial amount of time. At other hospitals, I believe they give parents a proper meal 3 times a day. To me this is proper care and the parents health is being met.

With the out patient care, my child has used all of 1 medication and they are in a lot of pain. They can't use nurofen as they are on other medications that can interact with each other. So, I am now left with panadol only. When I called the hospital up at PCH, I was told of the pain is not getting better,  go to my nearest ED. The nurse said I was given scripts, when they were told at the start if the conversation I only got medication no scripts. So, I have to go back to the ED near midland to get more pain relief for my child.

Also, on top my child was yelled at by a nurse on the ward, seemingly force fed by, I believe, restraining them down from throat down. Pushed out of the hospital and then 6 hours returns back with a bleed. I feel I was discriminated by the nurse about my way of handling my child who is 2 years old, the nurse calling them naughty as my child didn't want to eat and this is day 1 post op. Then made to feel intimated to leave and deal with it ourselves at home.

Overall I am not happy with the care there and it has made me think about going to PCH again for the future.  PCH I feel you need to change a few things to make your hospital better in terms of care.

Dear Deltadh45,

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding the care provided to your child following the removal of their tonsils and adenoids at the Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH).

Our priority is to deliver safe, quality nursing care to all patients, and I am truly sorry you did not feel this was the case in your experience.

A review of hospital-supplied meals to parents/carers of children admitted to PCH is currently underway, and your valued feedback has been shared with the team undertaking the review.

Some aspects of the experience you have shared are of particular concern and we would appreciate the opportunity to discuss further with you so that we can review the care provided. If you are open to this, we encourage you to contact the Child and Family Liaison Service by phone on 6456 0032 or by email at CAHSFeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Warm regards,

Marie
