My husband (72yo) diagnosed with malenoma and part of his treatment was with immunotherapy. This was able to be done in Kerang a 15-20 minute trip away which meant we were able to remain independent and manage ourselves. There is no public transport so we are geographically isolated. By not having to go to the city it meas our children do not have to take time off from work to accomodate this. It meant we only lost a couple of hours on these days so could normalise life more which was also great for the mental health aspect of this disease.
The staff we saw were fantastic and treated us as a couple and actually enjoyed the visits with them. All were country girls understanding country people - especially when it came to travelling distances etc.
I hope these services continue and increase in rural area as based on our experience it certainly takes some pressure off when you get a diagnosis like this.
