"Breastfeeding my newborn"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Breastfeeding Centre of WA

(as a service user),

My 2nd daughter, born in December 2024, was born with a tongue-tie and high palate, which made breastfeeding difficult. After seeing a specialist to get her tongue-tie snipped, I dealt with 4 occurances of mastitis over a 3 month period. I was determined to continue breastfeeding my daughter and would not have made it through the first 12 weeks without the support and guidance of the staff at the Breastfeeding Centre at King Edward Memorial.  I was in contact with numerous staff on a weekly basis to discuss symptoms, milk supply, changes to my baby and myself, and forward planning. I was always treated with kindness and understanding and an absolute respect for my perseverance through the process, with the end-goal of having a 100% breastfed and prospering baby. When the mastitis was reoccurring so soon after an antibiotic treatment, the staff looked into other ways to manage my health and milk supply.

My daughter is now 20 weeks old and I have been clear of mastitis for 5 weeks now. She is completely breastfed and measuring on the 85th percentile for her age.
