About: Prince of Wales Hospital / ASB 5N - Acute Aged Care Ward

(as a relative),

I’m writing as the daughter of a patient in their 80s. I won’t get to into it but I will mention a few things.

You think that a patient's needs and want would be registered and heard but unfortunately this hospital visit is anything but that. My parent has now been in hospital for 4 months. In those 4 months I believe they have been pushed around, mistreated, moved to other hospitals, at one point I wasn’t told they were out of surgery and thought they were dead.

It’s been really been a sad process to see how some staff members I've dealt with, including doctors treat an elderly person. We’ve had a few great moments with some amazing staff but otherwise this time here at Prince of Wales has been pretty bad.

As a close relative, I tried my best to be here as much as possible but I wasn’t able to be here full time with my parent as I needed to work but it’s been 5 weeks that I have been here 7 days a week from morning to evening and I have had to fight to get my parent on the path to go home.

It’s just been a real shame seeing how there doesn't seem to be enough staff and I feel the nurses are running around like headless chooks trying to get things done. Yes the hospital needs more staff but I believe the staff I've seen also need to learn how to listen, being kind and follow through.

I have emailed a senior manager of the hospital and haven’t received any response back. I will continue to let people know that if you don’t have a person to advocate for you be careful. Stand for what you believe, ask a lot of questions and don’t give up.
