Admitted to Bunbury Regional Hospital (BRH) via my local hospital for Surgical supervision. After a stay in ED short term I was transferred to Medical Ward B for management.
Now I have been admitted to BRH previously for the same condition and it was upon my 1st admission thru my answer to “Had I been admitted to a Hospital in another country last 12 months" that I said yes.
It was then confirmed thru BRH that I had been infected Candida Auris and was to be isolated and under “Contact Precautions”. This followed me thru my stay at another hospital and the next couple visits to BRH. All admissions a Clinical Infectious Disease person came to see myself within a day of admission.
My recent admission it was brought up by myself and agreed with nurses in ED ( Great care there) of my infection and the clean required after I was to be transferred to Medical Ward B. Great no issues there.
Transferred to Medical Ward B in an isolated room and contact precautions and was having great care and laughs with nurses for the 2 nights I stayed until the day my surgical Doctor said if all went well I could be discharged later.
The orderly’s came to my room and said I was being transferred from isolation to shared room with an elderly person. I did share my thoughts with them but they said they had no say in the matter and to speak with my nurse whom wasn’t available at the time but another nurse said the call was made by another staff member that I wasn’t deemed infectious hence my transfer. I did state that this was incorrect and I felt they pushed back on this saying or being flippant with my questioning of their decision. saying if I was infected why was I allowed out into the world?
I asked that I speak with the infectious disease team and the nurse said they had contacted them twice (How when I had only just brought this to their attention) but were busy and then the nurse disappeared. I chased hard with the nurse and asked to see if my records if it was noted in there, lo and behold it was….Eventually I had Steven from infectious control (Top bloke) come and see me and was extremely concerned on how such a error could occur and that he was sorry himself for it happening but I believe it wasn’t his place to say sorry, it was the, in my opinion, obnoxious other staff member who was dismissive of my questioning of their actions.
I will remember their name and face for any further visits and should I see this nurse on the ward I am admitted to I will see a transfer to another ward or hospital.
Also my wrist band clearly states the micro alert code and I believe if they had of looked at, as a staff member, would they would have seen the error and fixed the issue.
I could not get out of the ward fast enough because of my frustration with this person.
More training/understanding of infectious dis ashes is required in particular with people who lead teams would be my recommendation at the hospital.
