"Smoking Policy"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as a parent/guardian),

Our child was admitted to the hospital and having to stay for a few days. To break up the day my spouse and I would take our child out into the grassed  courtyard area inside the hospital area to get some sunshine and fresh air.  However, each time we went to the outside courtyard we were overwhelmed with the number of people smoking, on the bench seat area which clearly states no smoking. Staff and security were regularly walking past and did not once did I see anyone ask people to not smoke.

This is a health campus with unwell people, who have the right to go outside and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine without inhaling cigarette smoke.

It seems the smoking policy is clearly not enforced at this health campus which I believe needs to be addressed.

Dear slidecx93,

Thank you for your feedback and for raising this important concern.

I completely agree—the smoking policy must be followed and respected, particularly in a healthcare setting where fresh air and a safe environment are essential for all patients, visitors, and staff. I frequently remind individuals about the no-smoking policy and will continue to do so, but clearly, more needs to be done to reinforce this message.

We are actively working to improve this by bringing in additional tools and supports to help remind everyone about our smoke-free policy, especially in sensitive areas like the courtyard. It’s disappointing to hear that this hasn't been adequately enforced, and I’ll ensure this issue is raised again with the relevant teams, including security.

Thank you again for your feedback—it helps us make Broome Health Campus a safer and healthier place for all.

Kind regards,

James Sherriff
