"Concern Regarding Emergency Department Experience"

About: Kununurra Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

We were called urgently back to the ED, but no reason was given. When we arrived, my client, who has a disability, was scared and asked me to find out what was happening. I approached the nurse only to ask whether if the situation was urgent or not, hoping for reassurance, but I felt their response was dismissive. When I explained my client’s fear, I recall they simply said, they're old enough, which felt like a lack of empathy.

I then asked to speak with the doctor briefly, but the nurse refused. The nurse’s attitude made a difficult situation harder for both of us. I feel it’s essential that carers and medical staff collaborate with understanding, especially when caring for vulnerable individuals. I hope this feedback helps improve communication and care in the future.

Dear gamaamino,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to provide feedback on yours and your client's recent experience at the Kununurra Hospital.

We don't want any of our patients or their carers to feel that they are being dismissed when they are in hospital, more so when they have to come to the emergency department.

So that we can investigate this further, would you be comfortable reaching out to Emergency Department Clinical Nurse Manager Sophie Black? Sophie would be more than happy to help and will listen to you and your client to get to the bottom of this. Sophie can be contacted on 9166 4392.

Please feel to reach out at your convenience.

Kind Regards,

Sarah Wallace

A/Quality Coordinator
