"Our Mum's Brave Decision"

About: Voluntary Assisted Dying Liaison Service

(as a relative),

Our Mum had endured 20 years of Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma under two amazing Hematologists treating her with Chemotherapy then going into remission 8 times. However, the 9th time it presented in her spine paralyzing her from the waist down. No further treatment or medical intervention would change this situation, so the decision was made to keep her pain-free and comfortable. At 91 years of age, Mum was otherwise quite healthy and in control of her own life decisions.

As advised by the Palliative Care Team, Mum's time was limited from weeks to a few short months. At this time, the VAD pathway was explained as an option and we were introduced to the wonderful VAD Team.

Straight away Mum made the brave decision that she wanted to start this journey... to her, this meant no pain, no suffering, no long days or nights simply just waiting to pass and more importantly to her was, as a family, we had the chance to talk, reminisce, laugh, cry and just be together right to the very end.

The empathy, kindness and careful explanation of this pathway from the Liaison Team, Doctors & Nurses was truly comforting. We were encouraged to ask questions and for Mum to take as much time as she wanted.

The VAD pathway was a choice that allowed Mum to pass away on her terms and with total respect & dignity. This was her wish and she was always in complete control.

One year on from Mum's passing, we received a beautiful card from the VAD Team, remembering and honouring our Mum & the impact her brave decision had on many people.

We are sincerely grateful to the VAD Team...

Thank you for your sharing your story and expression of appreciation for the VAD service. It is very helpful for the VAD Team to hear and reflect on the experiences of patients and families.
