"Return Visit with a Different Kid"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

We were just at PCH not long ago with one of our kids, and here we are again—this time with a different one. At this rate, we might need a frequent flyer card or at least a reserved seat in the ED.

This time, our child had re-injured a recently healed fracture after a fall. We arrived at the Emergency Department around 7pm. It was absolutely packed—the waiting room was full, triage nurses were working non-stop, and the screen was showing a 5-hour wait. After being triaged and waiting for a while, we decided to head home and come back first thing in the morning.

When we returned at 7am, the experience was smooth and efficient. We were seen quickly, and the care we received was outstanding. The doctor was calm, thorough, and kind—organising an X-ray and discussing the next steps clearly. They offered a referral to the public orthopaedic service but were also very supportive when I explained we’d be following up privately. There was no judgment or hesitation—just a willingness to do what was best for our child. They also backed me up in a moment that really mattered: when my child was flat-out refusing the splint, the doctor stepped in and managed it firmly but kindly, helping us avoid a bigger issue and making sure the treatment was followed.

I especially want to mention the amazing nurse with rainbow-coloured hair. They were an absolute standout. They created such a light and fun environment for the kids—joking around, being silly, and helping distract them from the stress of being in hospital. But what really impressed me was how easily they switched gears. In the next breath, they’d be calmly asking the parent appropriate clinical questions and getting everything done with confidence and care. It was honestly one of the most seamless blends of fun and professionalism I’ve ever seen. That kind of presence—being able to hold space for kids emotionally while still delivering top-quality clinical care—is rare, and so appreciated.

Dear pixie

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We truly appreciate the time you've taken to provide such detailed feedback.

It sounds like your visit to the Emergency Department was quite the journey—from navigating the initial busy evening to receiving exceptional care in the morning. While long wait times can be frustrating, we’re glad to hear that the team was able to provide smooth and efficient care when you returned.

Your comments about the doctor’s professionalism and supportive approach mean a lot. It’s wonderful to hear that they took the time to explain things clearly and respected your choice regarding follow-up care. Supporting an apprehensive child in those moments isn’t easy, and we’re pleased to hear the doctor was able to step in with kindness and firmness when it mattered most.

It was also wonderful to hear how the nurse created such a supportive and uplifting environment, while maintaining professionalism and clinical expertise. Striking that balance—bringing joy and comfort while ensuring thorough, confident care really is a valuable skill.

We’ll make sure this feedback is passed on, as recognition like this is so meaningful. Knowing their efforts made a difference will undoubtedly be appreciated.

Thank you again for sharing and wishing your child a smooth recovery!

Warm regards
