I had my first baby at KEMH and saw Jane (Lactation Consultant) prior to being discharged home. Jane reviewed my breast feeding technique and provided me feedback on latch and positioning which was invaluable and gave me the confidence to go home.
I was lucky enough to follow up with Jane in clinic two days later to re-assess my technique. Jane provided me with further advice and even weighed my baby before and after feeding which provided objective feedback in regard to my baby’s breastmilk consumption. This further increased my confidence! Jane also provided me with advice on pumping and bottle feeding which I was unclear about.
With Jane’s input I felt well educated, supported and that I had the tools to prevent breast feeding complications. I did not require further follow up after this appointment.
Jane thank you for the truly wonderful service you provide. Your input is so important and invaluable, especially, I think, for first time mothers in providing us with the tools and confidence with this new and difficult skill.
I believe it would be wonderful if this service was routinely provided on the ward for first time mothers. I accessed this service via self referral whilst on the ward - as I was aware of the service from the antenatal education provided through KEMH. I believe that having early input would prevent complications, loss of confidence and potentially re-admissions.
Thank you Jane for your service.
