I was admitted to G54 recently due to my Cystic Fibrosis & bulging back disc, with a planned two-week stay. I've been having difficulty with hospital food, and my Dietitian suggested that I order from Uber Eats at my own expense, which I appreciate since I've lost 4kg and currently weigh 43kg due to my condition. I’ve found that I can generally manage these meals over 2-3 days by storing them in the individual fridges for ppwcf.
Initially, nursing staff helped me by heating these meals. However, on the third day of my admission, I was informed that due to safety protocols, they could no longer assist with this and suggested I use the microwave on Floor 8 instead. I communicated that I couldn't walk that distance, and the Charge Nurse Manager, mentioned that a nurse might be able to accompany me if time permitted. I believe this is just too difficult as the nurses are flat out and I think it is a ridiculous suggestion and seemingly poor use of nursing resources.
I understand the importance of infection control, but I feel that there could be a more patient-centered approach to this situation. Since I'm unable to walk to Floor 8 due to my condition, it seems a bit paradoxical to me, to expect me to heat my food there and bring it back, as this may present additional risks. I hope we can find a solution that prioritizes both safety and my well-being during my stay. Thank you for your understanding and support.
I am also representing other people with CF as the Chair of the CF Adult Consumer Advocate Committee.
