"Treatment in ED"

About: Carnarvon Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I came into the hospital with pains in my right side that I'd had for a few days.

I had a doctor when I first arrived that I found was attentive and caring and then in the afternoon I met with a different doctor who made me feel like I was making it all up! I travelled an hour and a half to carnarvon from a station where i work with severe flank pain, I have a history of kidney cancer and currently lesions on my liver which my urologist from Perth is investigating so of course pain made me feel quite worried considering ide had a partial nephrectomy late last year, this doctor made me feel completely humiliated and like I was just here for the fun of it! I recall I heard the way they spoke to another patient the same way!

I think their manner is terrible and they speak very loud so the whole of the emergency department can hear which is quite embarrassing!

Only after being dosed up with endone, morphine and other drugs did I feel that my pain was a 0/10,

Never have I felt so bad about trying to get help with feeling unwell.

I was driven to hospital by another colleague and as it were getting quite late they had to leave and return back to the station, I recall the doctor said to me that, they guess's it would be unfair to expect me to leave with nowhere to go for the night,  and that I could be admitted to the ward as a social visit. My pain was masked with medication, nothing was solved, and they seemingly guessed that it maybe this or maybe that.

On the up side the nurses and gso officers I saw were wonderful!

So after my social visit I'll return to the station with flank pain!

Here's hoping there's a GP that will help me because I feel I was failed this doctor.

Dear scutumzk74,

Thank you for reaching out on Care Opinion.

I was very sorry to read of your experience at Carnarvon ED. It was very unfortunate you were left feeling humiliated by your interaction with our staff member for which I apologise most sincerely. Our aim at Carnarvon is to provide high quality care, delivered by compassionate staff that respect our consumers. You feedback is clear we did not achieve this for you.

It is crucial we ensure a patient is an active participant on their health journey and we as clinicians listen to our patients who can provide much useful information to allow us to diagnose and treat them. Your story shows you have had a long and difficult treatment history and we should have viewed you as the most valuable source of information in allowing us to diagnose and treat your pain.

I would be grateful if you would consider contacting me so I can listen to more of your story and ensure that Carnarvon Hospital are doing all we can to support you on your healthcare journey.
