In April 2025, my fiance was admitted to RPH for an unexpected medical event. He has unfortunately passed away on 10 April. During the week we were in the ICU, the nurse, doctors and staff were all very kind, understanding and compassionate. In particular, our attending Doctors, Dr Andy and Dr George, Nurse Jackie, Nicole, Shauna, Christine, Young, Meghan, Oria, and the lovely Nurse Camille and Cassie who was with us on the last day. Nurses really are god's angels. There were so many other kind souls that helped us that I unfortunately do not remember the names of, from the turners to the senior nurses and the cleaning staff.
I appreciate that everyone did everything within their capacity to provide support, and ease the pain during this turbulent period. The doctor's considerate, patient and detailed explanations to help us understand the gravity of my fiance's condition. Their gentle approach to help us accept hard truths was very much appreciated.
Nurse Young let us put on a spotify playlist of my fiance's favourite songs. Meghan offered for us help with cleaning him, which was a very thoughtful gesture to allow us to care for him once more. Nurse Camille and Orla set up a sofa bed to allow us to hold his hand while sleeping. Everyone would check in to see if I have had enough to eat, drink and rest during our stay. I was particularly touched by Nurse Cassie's dedication to ensure our religious rites were maintained at the mortuary after my fiance passed.
During the nights that i spent in the ICU by his bedside, the nurses gave me space and privacy, i felt comfortable speaking my mind and saying my last words to my fiance even in their presence. I think they do not get enough credit for the tough circumstances they have to witness everyday, i'm sure they could feel my sadness and pain but they still smiled and cheered me on. It felt like I was being comforted by a good friend with no fear of judgement.
Our Social worker Ciara was really resourceful and helpful with preparing letters for family members that were overseas and needed passports expedited, and preparing letters for workplaces. She was so kind and compassionate too.
The one bit of improvement I would suggest is related to the administration side of things. I haven't heard from the hospital since we walked out after my Fiance passed away. I'm not sure if I should be anticipating paperwork or any bills. Even a single letter to confirm this would be nice, as this is my first time dealing with the death of a family member in a hospital and I do not know what to expect.
