"The right to die on country"

About: Quairading Health Service

(as a relative),

Older relative's 89 nearly 90. They were born out here in the bush. Their mother and father lived there. Now they want to come back here and die out here.

They’re having a big struggle because of the prejudice of Quairading. They are in a care home in Bentley. Been there for over month – 6 weeks - and they want to come home to Quairading.

I believe the prejudice in the town is that bad for people who want to come back and die on their own country. The manager of Quairading District Hospital, I understand they have control of the hospital and control of the old peoples Parker House. There’s beds up there, 10 or 12 beds seemingly empty. They've been running it for over 10 years. They are telling us they don't have the staff. How ridiculous and stupid I think this is, it’s been there for over 80 years, for both old and young.

I wouldn’t be so angry if it’s not true. I am 83 and I will be looking for a bed up there soon. We are Aboriginal. We have been paying rates for this shire for 60 years. I think we need some changes in this town. I believe it’s run by prejudiced people. At the moment, my relative has been given the ultimatum. If they're not removed in the next 5 days they will have to go to a place in Perth. They don't want to go to a place in Perth. They will be gone in a couple of weeks if that happens.

Dear couragexx90,

Please accept my deepest apologies for how you feel around care provision for your relative.

I am extremely concerned to read your feedback around the transfer of care for your relative to Quairading Hospital.

WA Country Health Service strives to provide care to rural and regional people to reduce the need for care off country, away from friends and family.

Please be assured that I am in the process of investigating how we may be able to provide the care your relative deserves and requires.

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns, please reach out to me at philippa.reppington@health.wa.gov.au or on 9081 3200 if I can be of any further assistance.

Kind regards,

Philippa Reppington
