"Incorrect information regarding formula for babies"

I presented with my 3 month old to SJOG Midland as they had had blood in their stool over the weekend and was very unsettled. We just wanted to make sure this wasn’t something sinister as we are aware of their allergies.

When we came through to a bed in emergency my baby was upset, but my spouse was settling them. A nurse entered our space and said to my spouse, your baby doesn’t look like they want to be settled like that, even tho this nurse has never met my baby before.

The first doctor then came in to review him. When discussing the history the doctor proclaimed it is normal for a formula fed baby to have blood in their stool which is wildly incorrect. The doctor did not perform an abdominal exam and was ready to discharge us which I protested to.

A short while later a second doctor came to review my baby and I gave them the same history. This doctor did perform an abdominal exam expressing there must have been a miscommunication with the original doctor which is shocking in itself - however they showed a complete lack of knowledge of developmental milestones, asking if my baby is crawling. My baby is only 3 months old.

The doctor decided to call the paediatric team. While waiting for the paediatricians the nurse from earlier came in and told us we were being discharged which I protested stating that the paediatric team was coming to see us. They then left the space and never came back to confirm if we were being discharged or being seen. The paediatric team then reviewed my baby and were amazing! No complaints about them. I am, however, shocked at the emergency staff’s seeming lack of knowledge surrounding little ones and the nursing staffs disrespect to my baby’s other parent.
