"cardiac arrest"

About: POWH Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Royal North Shore Hospital

(as the patient),

Late December 2024, I did not feel too well during a gym workout and cut it short.

I walked down to the change room area, and when I tried to undress, my shoulders seemed frozen. Not realising what was happening, the pressure moved across my chest and I had to lie down. Only then did I realise I was going through a cardiac arrest.

Because it was just a few days before Christmas, the gym and locker room were empty. Unable to move, I feared the worst. Then another gym member walked in and immediately called the emergency service. They arrived, went through the first aid protocol and rushed me to the hospital, where a stent was placed in the blocked artery during an emergency procedure.  A defibrillator had to be used to stabilise my heart rhythm.

I spent 7 days in the hospital and started the recovery program shortly after.

The teams in POWH and RNS were equally friendly, caring and supportive.
