"Cataract surgery waiting list"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

My feedback is not very good. I have been trying to get my cataracts removed from my eyes and they keep on telling me it’s not this month, we’ll have to reschedule it and this has been going on for more than two years. Could even be three years now.

I am just not very happy about constantly being pushed back. When I ask, they say there are more important cases than yours and that might be true but this has been going on for so long now.

I have written on this card the name of the person who gave it to me. The person who I spoke to last time I went to the hospital which was only a couple of weeks ago. They had lost my information. They said the only thing we’ve got is that there’s a possibility we can do it in July but that’s no guarantee.

Dear magpiekc36,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are truly sorry to hear about the ongoing delays you've faced in accessing cataract surgery at Sydney Eye Hospital. We understand how frustrating and distressing it must be to wait so long, especially when the delays significantly impact your quality of life.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused and for any breakdowns in communication regarding your case and personal information. It is certainly not the standard of care or service we aim to provide.

Demand for specialist eye surgery is high, and while we do our best to prioritise patients based on clinical urgency, we recognise how important it is to ensure that all patients are kept informed and treated in a timely and respectful manner.

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. If you are willing, we would be grateful for the opportunity to follow up directly with you. Please contact us directly at SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au if you are open to this. This allows us to look into your situation more specifically and provide any additional information we can.

Once again, we sincerely apologise for your experience and thank you for your patience and feedback.

Kind regards,

Dr Pauline Rumma
