"Splenectomy"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Acute Surgical Ward 6G

(as a service user),

I had a splenectomy last Thursday. I then spent a week in the acute surgical ward, because I developed pneumonia. During that week I also had two bouts of sepsis.

I just want to thank the incredible nurses, doctors, OT’s, Physios and everyone who got me through.

I can’t thank my incredible surgeon and his team enough. Thank you, thank you, for getting me successfully through the operation, and for all the care afterwards. I’m in awe of the skill and the compassion.

The nurses are completely amazing. At the start of my second bout of sepsis I had a heavy fall. Once I was on the ground I had absolutely no strength and they somehow got me on a chair and back to bed. Absolute heroes.

They work tirelessly and genuinely care.

I also want to thank the catering department and the staff who bring meals around. The food was so good! Lots of vegetables and tasty meat dishes, I really enjoyed it. A big thank you to them.

The doctors were equally tireless and got me through the pneumonia and sepsis, and got me home. I’m so grateful.

The OT’s and Physios were so lovely and got me back on my feet, and back using my stick. They also made some provisions for me to go home with, a big thanks to them.

I can’t forget the PCA’s who kept everything clean and got me whatever else I needed and wheeled me around so expertly. They work so hard, thank you to them.

One teeny issue I had was the absolute freezing temperature on the ward. I understand why it has to be kept cold, but can I suggest you offer patients long socks, more warming blankets, or at least let them know to bring these items with them. A really warm dressing gown could also be a suggestion. I’ve never been colder in my life, all I had was the hospital gown and the ankle socks,  which I was very grateful for. For those of us without a lot of family support, we can’t have these items brought in.

I’m now comfortably at home , resting and building up strength. I’ll always be so grateful to the staff at rph. Legends.

Dear Link,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience on Care Opinion.

I want to extend my sincere appreciation for your thoughtful and moving message about your recent admission to Ward 6G at Royal Perth Hospital.

Reading your post was both humbling and uplifting. Your kind words about our nurses, doctors, surgeons, allied health professionals, catering staff, and patient care assistants truly mean a great deal to all of us. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear that the care, compassion, and dedication of our team made such a positive impact during what must have been a very challenging time for you.

I am especially grateful for your recognition of the many different teams who supported your recovery, from the surgical and medical staff to the physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and catering and cleaning teams. Your appreciation will be shared with everyone involved in your care, and I know it will bring them great pride and encouragement.

Thank you also for your thoughtful suggestion regarding ward temperature and patient comfort. Your feedback is valuable, and we will certainly take it into consideration as we continue to improve the patient experience, especially for those without immediate family support.

I am pleased to hear that you are now home and recovering well.

With warm regards and best wishes for your continued recovery.
